Почему PDF-меню на телефоне может портить продажи - Zen Webmaster

A PDF menu is handy for printing. But on a phone, it is often awkward: pinching to zoom, dragging the page around with a finger, waiting for it to load, hunting for prices. If a customer is hungry or choosing quickly, a clunky menu can be exactly what sends them to a competitor instead.

A good menu reads instantly, with no zooming and no downloading a file.

These days, plenty of people search for a restaurant from their phone, and a menu needs to open fast and stay readable without zooming in. A PDF can look great on a computer, but on a mobile screen it turns into a tiny, hard-to-read poster, and search engines understand that kind of content far less well than an ordinary HTML page.

What a menu on a website should look like

A good menu is a web page or a well-built mobile block: dish categories, clear prices, up-to-date opening hours, fast loading, easy one-handed reading, a booking button nearby, and the ability to update prices without needing a designer.

A PDF gets in the way especially when the file weighs several megabytes, the text is too small, the prices are out of date, and you have to keep zooming in on a phone, or when, instead of one clear menu, several different PDFs exist side by side.

Where the risk lies

The main risk is that the customer notices effort where they should be noticing appetite: someone cannot find a dish, the file takes ages to load, Google understands the menu less well, and the waiting staff end up having to explain the website’s shortcomings.

What you can check yourself

  • open the menu on a phone with no Wi-Fi
  • ask someone to find the price of a specific dish
  • check the file size of the PDF, if one is being used
  • check whether an old date is still sitting on the menu
  • compare it with what the menu would look like as an ordinary web page

When it is better to delegate

If a PDF is useful for printing, you can keep it as an extra link, but the main menu customers actually use is better off as a convenient web block. If the restaurant wants to bring in customers from search and from the map, the menu needs to be fast, specifically on mobile.

Zen Webmaster can move a menu from PDF to a convenient web block that is easy to update yourself.
