Most customers open a website from their phone, so checking the mobile version is not an optional extra, it is a basic necessity. For a first check, no special tools are needed: just open the site as an ordinary customer would and follow the path through to an enquiry.
A site can look great on a computer and still be awkward on a phone: buttons too small, a menu covering the screen, a form that does not fit. If the owner only checks the desktop version, they can easily miss a problem their customers are running into every day.
What good looks like, and what usually gets in the way
A good mobile version is easy to use with one hand: the text reads without zooming, buttons are easy to tap, the form fits on screen, and the page loads quickly with no horizontal scrolling. Common problems: a button that is too small, a popup covering the content, a menu that will not close, or a page that jumps around while loading.
Where the risk lies
Mobile problems have a direct effect on enquiries: the customer cannot tap the button, the form does not submit, and advertising keeps paying for clicks that lead nowhere.
How to check it yourself
- open the site with no Wi-Fi, the way a customer would
- find a service, a price, and the enquiry button
- call using the phone number button
- submit a test form
- check three to five important pages, and turn the phone to landscape
When it is better to delegate
A basic check is something you can do yourself. But if the same problems keep showing up across different pages, it is better to fix them systematically: templates, CSS, images, caching and forms. Zen Webmaster can carry out that kind of thorough check and put the fixes in place.
